Vanadium 440
Vanaduim has seventeen hand made joints, which is more than any other proteus class robot I’ve created thus far. This allows for unprecedented levels of poseability, even to the level of being able to cross her arms, and her legs.
As the closeups in the gallery suggest, no detail was overlooked in the careful sculpting of Vanadium. Due to the intense nature of creating poseable robots, I do not typically create them unless they are commissioned. But in this case, I was excited to see what I could do with some new ideas I had about getting closer to mimicking the range of humans with the simplest design possible, with the added challenges of working in this relatively small scale, and with ad-hock materials from discarded parts. For example, by cutting away material behind the knee joints, her legs are able to bend more, while looking more human than if I had left the material whole. This illustrates the function determines form in human biology nicely.
I have always found hands – as well as the careful positioning of the hands – to be the most expressive element of my work. It’s exciting to introduce actual articulated wrists, as well as twistable forearms and upper arms to the range of motion and therefore body language.
I had a lot of fun with exploring all the ways I could get the metal finishes to have range. One example would be her boilerplates – tiny radiating glints were hand applied to the copper tags for subtle excitement. I am enjoying the idea of using my file as a painter uses their bush, or in the style a musician plays their instrument. The file marks around her head is my portrayal of Vanadium’s hair.
As you can see, Vanadium is extremely photogenic and very expressive. She can emote a very wide range of seemingly complex thoughts.
