Ajay 444

Ajay is an atomic class gestural figure study, which hearkens back to the first robot I made twenty years before, Ziggy. After making many intense, time-consuming pieces, I felt it was time to loosen up and have some fun.

My early works from 2006 possess a loose, somewhat goofy and folk-art vibe to them, which I find can be charming. Over the last two decades as a sculptor I have moved away from a lot of those qualities, trying to more closely mimic the human form. I very much enjoy that pursuit but I also find great value in indulging in some whimsy in order to loosen up.

Many people don’t recognize the ubiquitous parts used in Ajay, and I was surprised that more than one cycling friend could not identify Ajay’s torso: the steel hub of a front bicycle wheel, with parts cut away. The hollow inside is capped with a trimmed piece of copper sheet, which has been pressed through a set of rollers with a window screen which makes it’s grid pattern. The body is reminiscent of tuxedo coattails.
